Twenty-Six

~Drake~

Keegan storms back inside the house, and I follow, still snickering to myself when I hear my phone ring from the kitchen where I left it on charge.

“Shit, move, that will be Janet,” I state, then barge past Keegan racing toward the kitchen to answer it.

I snatch the phone off the counter and quickly answer.

“Please tell me you still have the last address?”

“Well, hello to you too, Drake!” she snaps when I see Keegan follow. He stops just in the doorway and leans against it.

“I haven’t got time to bicker, Janet. Did you get the address or not?”

“Yes, of course….”

“Well?” I ask, becoming slightly annoyed. She should have all this information waiting and ready since she handled the lease.

“Maybe you should speak to Maya first, Drake,” she tells me, and my brows pinch.

“Janet, the address. What are you hiding?”

“It’s not an address. Well, it is, but it's a place. Not a residential house.”

“So, an apartment,” I ask, not understanding.

“No, it’s an institution… It’s a mental asylum, Drake,” I nearly drop the phone, not expecting her words.

“Drake?” she asks.

“Send me the address,” I tell her before hanging up. Keegan wanders over naked, opens the fridge, and grabs the juice carton.

“So?” he questions, drinking straight from the carton.

A few seconds later, my phone bings, and I pick it up and open the message and the address link—Oakwood Institution. I press the link and grab my keys, seeing it is a four-hour drive.

"Drake?" Keegan calls. I stop at the kitchen door.

"What did she say?"

"Nothing, I'll be back." I go to leave but then pause, now worried. Is Maya crazy? And if she is...how safe is she to be around?

Turning around, I look at Keegan and roll my eyes. "Can you put some damn clothes on! And stay away from Maya until I return?" I tell him, and his brows crease down the middle.

"Fine." He shakes his head, and I turn to leave the house. Rushing down the steps, I move toward my truck and climb in and start the car. Yet as I attempt to turn the car around, I notice Maya in her garden, tending to her plants. Guilt gnaws at me, knowing I am doing things behind her back.

But I need to know. My pack has been through enough. Clay and Keegan have suffered enough. I won't let her hurt them or my pack, so I shake off the thoughts and leave, driving past her place without a glance in her direction. In the rearview mirror, I see her outstretched hand as she waves but then drops her arm.

The drive to Oakwood Institution is long and monotonous. The highway stretched out before me like a never-ending string, the asphalt illuminated by the bright sunlight as I wound through the picturesque landscape heading to a city I'd never been to before. Following the GPS, it leads me through the city, only to spit me out the other side. The further I drive, the more nervous I get. As I turn off the
